The UC campuses have seen many protests this past week. Both peaceful and violent, these protests are both students and teachers fighting together against tuition increases.
As of last Thursday, the University of California’s Board of Regents approved a 32 percent fee increase towards UC tuition. Students of UCLA gathered to have a sit-in at the Campbell Hall to protest the increase.
“I can assure you this is our one best shot at preventing this recession from pulling down a great system toward mediocrity,” said UC President, Mark Yudof.
The students locked the doors and held their ground. UCLA was forced to cancel all classes in Campbell Hall for that day. These peaceful protests have continued throughout this budget crisis. A total of 14 UCLA students have been arrested.
The UCLA spokesman, Phil Hampton, is not concerned about the student’s protests. “No action is being taken by the university; they aren’t posing a threat,” said Hampton.
The deficit for the UC school system is reaching 535-million-dollars.
