Friday the 22nd didn’t just mark the end of the week, but the end of a TV legacy. Conan O’Brien hosted his final episode of The Tonight Show after only a seven-month run. Ever since the controversy of Conan stepping down began there has been a huge influx of support for him. Almost every other website or Facebook page is plastered with “Team Conan” and “I’m With Coco” slogans. Coco being the nickname fondly placed on Conan by academy award winning actor Tom Hanks, who was also the guest on the final show.
While I, among millions of other fans, am devastated that Conan’s time was short lived on the Tonight Show, I think it’s safe to say we’re all waiting to see what he’ll do next. Though his official agreement with NBC states he cannot sign up to host something new for another seven months, I can securely say all the Conan supporters will follow him to any network he goes to. In the mean time, it appears that NBC will continue to shoot itself in the foot, and give Jay Leno the hosting spot on the show once more. I will do my best to take the advice of the beloved show host and try “not to be cynical.” If anything good can be said of all the late night chaos, it is that at least now Conan knows how much he is loved and adored by the celebrity community and general population alike.
Conan spoke eloquently during the last moments of the show stating that “despite this sense of loss, I believe this should be a happy moment. Every comedian dreams of hosting ‘The Tonight Show,’ and for seven months, I got to do it my way, with people I love. I do not regret one second of anything that we’ve done here.” His words were honest and full of anticipation for the future. For those of you who are true Conan fans, I say it is important now more than ever to show support for our Coco. And so I’ll leave you with his words, “Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you’re kind, amazing things will happen.”
