Earlier this year, the California State University Employees Union (CSUEU) made history by adding 20,000 student assistants to its ranks, aiming for equitable working conditions across all CSU campuses. “We are demanding better working conditions because student assistants are the ones that hold down the campuses. Without us, our campuses wouldn’t function,” Kaily Brooks, a second year political science major and Bargaining Team member of the CSUEU at San Diego State University, reaffirmed with conviction this Monday. In a passionate interview with our Editor In Chief, Allen Monge, Brooks laid bare the CSUEU’s goals for this academic year along with the steps the union needs to take in order to ensure fair compensation for student workers across the CSU system.
Brooks emphasized the need for basic rights such as fair wages, parking permits and sick leave — rights that are often denied to student workers. “Student jobs are real jobs and we deserve to be appreciated properly for that because without us, our campuses, they would close down. They would, because we are given managerial tasks and work that full-time staff should do, but the management gets away with paying us less and giving us fewer benefits,” Brooks stated passionately, highlighting the critical role that student workers play in maintaining CSU operations. From administrative duties to campus housing services, these workers ensure that the campuses run smoothly. Despite this, CSU management has continuously rejected proposals for wage increases and other essential benefits.
Currently, the union is in the process of drafting its first contract and bargaining with CSU management. In response, CSUEU is launching a membership drive across all CSU campuses, both in-person and online, aiming to build union power by signing as many members as possible. With a total of 36,000 members, including the recent addition of student assistants, CSUEU is one of the largest unions in the country. The union’s top priorities for this academic year include securing livable wages, better parking options and protections for working conditions. Brooks explained how many student assistants, some working multiple jobs, struggle to make ends meet, balancing academics and the financial burden of living expenses such as rent, groceries and utilities.
Additionally, the union recently secured a grievance procedure, a significant victory that allows student assistants to address workplace discrimination and unjust disciplinary actions. The procedure is outlined in Article 7 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the CSU and CSUEU, outlining both the informal and formal processes of addressing workplace grievances with administrators, campus presidents and the Office of the Chancellor. This accomplishment has energized student workers, sparking excitement across campuses about the union’s future goals.
Brooks passionately concluded, “Strong unions win strong contracts,” rallying her fellow workers and students to stand united in their fight for justice. The union’s efforts will not only benefit CSU students but also set an example for student workers across the country. With growing momentum, CSUEU is determined to continue building strength and achieving the recognition student workers deserve.
