Graduation can be an exciting yet overwhelming time. Between final exams, capstone projects and making plans for the future, it is easy to overlook some crucial steps before walking across that stage. To help you stay on track, here is the ultimate to-do list for CI graduates to ensure a smooth and stress-free transition.
1. Apply for Graduation
Before anything else, ensure you have applied for graduation through CI’s Records & Registration portal. Missing this step could delay your degree conferral, so check your email and portal for deadlines. If you are unsure about your eligibility, reach out to your academic advisor.
2. Meet with an Academic Advisor
Scheduling a final meeting with your academic advisor is essential to confirm that all your degree requirements have been met. They can also provide guidance on any last-minute academic concerns and offer advice for post-graduation opportunities.
3. Pay Outstanding Fees
Unpaid fees, including tuition, parking fines or library charges, can place holds on your diploma and transcripts. Log in to your student portal to check for any outstanding balances and clear them to avoid complications.
4. Order Your Cap & Gown
Wearing the correct regalia is a key part of your graduation ceremony. Order your cap and gown through the CI Bookstore ahead of time to make sure you receive the right size and style.
5. RSVP for Commencement
Graduation is not automatic! You must RSVP to confirm your attendance at the ceremony. Keep an eye on University emails for details on ticketing, guest limits and event logistics.
6. Take Graduation Photos
Commemorate this milestone by scheduling a graduation photoshoot. Scenic campus spots like the Bell Tower and Central Mall provide the perfect backdrop. Do not forget to include friends and family in some of your shots!
7. Update Your Resume & LinkedIn
Your resume and LinkedIn should reflect your latest achievements, including internships, leadership roles and key coursework. Many employers check LinkedIn profiles, so make sure yours is polished and professional.
8. Connect with Career Services
CI’s Career Development Services can help with job searches, resume critiques and mock interviews. Employers often recruit directly from CI, so taking advantage of these resources can give you a competitive edge.
9. Return or Renew Library Books
If you have borrowed any materials from the John Spoor Broome Library, make sure to return them or renew them to avoid unnecessary fines. Graduation should not be overshadowed by last-minute fees or forgotten items!
10. Plan Your Graduation Celebration
Celebrate your hard work by planning a get-together with friends and family. Whether it is a formal event or a casual beach day, take time to enjoy this momentous occasion.
11. Check Your CSU Email for Post-Graduation Resources
Even after graduation, CI may send important updates regarding job postings, alumni events and networking opportunities. Be sure to monitor your school email for valuable resources.
12. Order Your Official Transcripts
If you plan to apply for graduate school or a job that requires proof of degree completion, request your official transcripts early. Processing times can vary, so do not wait until the last minute.
13. Join the CI Alumni Association
Stay connected to your alma mater by joining the Alumni & Friends Association. Membership can provide networking opportunities, career support and even discounts on future programs.
14. Say Goodbye (For Now) to Your Favorite Spots
Before you leave, take a walk around campus and visit the places that defined your college experience. Whether it is your favorite study corner in the library or a spot with a great view, take a moment to reflect on how far you have come.
