Art Provided by Em Lockwood

This week, we are highlighting the artistic talent of Em Lockwood, fourth year, studio arts major with an emphasis in graphic design and illustration. Ever since Lockwood was a child, she has always been keen on creating art. When taking classes here at CI, she noticed that the General Education classes did not pique her interest as much as the art classes did. While taking these classes, she gained more knowledge and experience, thus broadening her skills. She describes her love for art as being a natural outlet of expression and a way to experiment freely. Lockwood continues to explore her artistic talent, creating both traditional and digital artwork.
Some of Lockwood’s favorite traditional mediums to work with are colored pencils and alcohol markers, and more recently, she has gravitated towards digital art. One of Lockwood’s hobbies that she mentioned is sticker-making. “I do enjoy making stickers in my downtime or when the urge to draw a new design comes up,” she said. When it comes to drafting up and creating her own artwork, it is important to her that she never forgets her self-expression. With this in mind, when designing her stickers, it allows the playful, cute, and squeezable style that she has improved upon over the years to shine through in all that she creates.
Over the years, Lockwood has also become well-rounded in graphic design, illustration, and photography; while working hard to one day land her dream job as a tattoo artist. “I find this career both meaningful and inspiring. I am motivated by the idea of creating pieces that allow people to express themselves and feel more confident in their own skin,” she added. With this being her last semester here at CI, she is now closer to the day when she can create art that will be a part of people’s lives forever.
What makes art meaningful to Lockwood is the feeling of bringing joy and a sense of wonder to others when they admire her artwork. “When people see my work and do the ‘Ooos,’ ‘Aahs,’ and ‘Wows’ that’s what does it…that is the best part,” she remarked. As an artist, she continues to dedicate herself to her passions and talents in hopes it makes just as big an impact on their lives as it has on hers.
