This week’s artist highlight puts the spotlight on Vash Nahabedian, a third-year transfer student majoring in Studio Arts. For Nahabedian, art has always been a constant hobby of theirs, and overtime, they have grown their talents with the passion they have for creating art. “One of the first fandoms I was in was My Little Pony,” Nahabedian shared. For about five years, they found themselves drawing ponies through most of their art career, then later made a shift to drawing people. Nahabedian mentioned that by watching the artistic style that goes into every episode of anime, as well as character design, influenced them to adopt an anime art style when it came to drawing. They pointed out that the whimsical style, such as the characters’ spiky hair and big eyes, along with other key features of anime characters, is what really stood out to them. Later on, they decided to branch out with their talents and make another switch in artistic styles, thus moving to a semi-realistic style.

When asked about which mediums they prefer to create in, Nahabedian said, “My main media is digital (art), since I got an iPad to work off of, and acrylic painting, since they are my most well-received pieces, since people can really see the labor put into it.” When painting, Nahabedian enjoys painting nature and landscapes, such as flowers or even creatures of nature, whereas for digital art, they tend to lean more towards drawings of people.
Nahabedian is currently working on a moth series, painting different types such as the atlas moth, lunar moth and rosy maple moth; where they add flowers that complement the moth’s colors. They also pointed out how they are adding unique frames to their finished pieces that will truly bring out the painting’s features. So far, Nahabedian has come to really enjoy working on this series and hopes to continue it. Another one of their favorite projects has been a painting of a bat, with bright pink and purple flowers to continue the theme of nature and creatures that they have grown to love when it comes to creating art.

When asked about the future of Nahabedian’s art career, they said they are open to working for companies and creating art for them, such as character design for cartoon shows, being an animator, writing for them, or working on the creation of video games. Another one of their passions for the future is vending with their art and selling it to others.
Nahabedian’s creativity does not stop with just painting and digital drawing. They have also been working on a novel. They have had this idea for the past decade, but just now got around to writing it. When asked about their other hobbies Nahabedian commented, “I do like writing a lot, (I also enjoy) dabbling in a bit of other hobbies, like crochet, jewelry making, sewing costumes, but (I’m) hoping to get back into it.”

When asked about what art means to Nahabedian, they stated that “Art is a huge aspect of everyone’s life, without art, we wouldn’t be human. It’s just a natural instinct for everyone as we make it all the time and see it all the time. It makes an effect on everyone’s life, as a creative outlet and hopefully a way to make money,” they added with a laugh.
