Jane Kim, former member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and candidate for California Insurance Commissioner, visited Cal State Channel Islands on Aug. 28, 2026, to shoot an educational video for political science students to inform them of the role the Insurance Commissioner has within the California Executive branch.
The California Department of Insurance (CDI) was established in 1868 and is the agency for consumer protection for California’s insurance marketplace. The department regulates the insurance industry, including overseeing insurer solvency, along with licensing insurance agents and brokers. The CDI also oversees insurance company practices, resolving complaints made by consumers and investigating insurance fraud.
Kim’s involvement in politics began by with working with public high school students as well as youth organizations. Kim stated how her involvement within her community led her to run for her local school board, which began her career in electoral politics. Kim currently serves as the California director of the Working Families Party, which focuses on the working families of America, coming together to strive for a better future for themselves and their children. Kim previously served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and as California political director during the 2020 presidential campaign.
During the interview, Kim discussed her experience of pursuing politics at a young age. Entering into the political field in her 20s, Kim did not know everything about the process or how things worked. “I didn’t know a whole lot when I ran,” Kim said. “But I’m so glad that I kind of jumped in that way.”
Kim explained how the California Insurance Commissioner’s role can affect young adults’ lives as they begin making their own financial decisions. Kim mentioned how university students begin navigating insurance related to transportation, housing and other aspects of financial independence. Kim also highlighted that the California Insurance Commissioner’s role is to make insurance more accessible as Californians take on these responsibilities. “Part of this job’s role is to make insurance affordable, so that people can do all of these things.” Kim noted.
As the conversation came to an end, Kim reflected on her experience and how it taught her that becoming involved can be a way to learn about public service firsthand. Kim also highlighted her hopes for young people and their willingness to pursue public service themselves.
