The Associated Students Inc. supports students on campus in various ways. The ASI fee referendum was introduced at the beginning of the academic year by the Student Fee Advisory Committee. ASI got the word out to students. According to the University’s website, the “ASI Fee supports your ASI Student Government, Student Programming Board (SPB), Ekho the Mascot, The CI View (student news), Student Clubs & Organizations, and key Campus Partners (departments).”
The ASI fee referendum passed in a campus-wide election that took place Nov. 3-5. There were 493 ballots cast, with 64% voting yes. Starting in Fall 2026, there will be a $20 increase per semester until it reaches $115 in 2028. The ASI referendum website provides more insights on some of these statistics. The https://asi.csuci.edu website states the fee has, “stayed flat at $75 per semester, but student needs and costs have grown.”
The fee will support student jobs, internships, clubs, organizations, services and on-campus events. ASI is responsible for fun events on campus like Foodie Tuesdays and Block parties. These groups on campus ensure the organization and structure for certain activities that happen on campus that are meant for students. The increase in the ASI fee will ensure that there is continued provided resources for students, so in the end, their fees go back to them. This vote will ensure more funding to sustain events and news ideas possible on campus. It would also allow for students to have a continued opportunity to take on different roles on campus and engage with the campus.
The passing of the ASI fee referendum marks a significant investment in the student experience at CI. With the gradual fee increase beginning in Fall 2026, students can expect programming, job and leadership opportunities and support for the many services that shape campus life to remain. While the cost will rise over the next few years, the return is aimed squarely at students themselves, ensuring the presence of vibrancy, involvement and opportunities available at CI. Ultimately, the referendum reflects a shared commitment to managing an engaged and resourced campus community for current and future Dolphins.
