Last weekend in pumping surf, Ventura, California’s own Surfers Point hosted the fourth annual Queen Of The Point, all female surf competition. Queen of The Point, a 501(c)3, and subset of the long standing Malibu Boardriders Club, has become a pillar in the surf community for celebrating and empowering female longboarders worldwide since their debut competition in 2022. The organization has three contests annually: a summer contest in Malibu, fall contest here at home in Ventura and a spring contest in the Philippines. While each contest boasts their own uniqueness, the core mission of Queen Of The Point remains the same: “Queen of the Point is more than a competition; it’s a movement towards a more inclusive, equitable, and respectful surf community. Join us in celebrating and empowering women in longboard surfing, as we work together to make waves in the sport and beyond,” according to the organization’s website.
The anticipated annual contest put on quite the show. With Hurricane Narda bringing in consistent surf, the women and girls charged, cross-stepped, and nose rode for the judges and spectators lining the beach all weekend long.
The contest has several divisions to ensure all ages get fair wave time. Divisions range from 10 and under, 11-13, 14-16, 17-19, 20s, 30s, 40s, 50-plus, and an invite only professional division with monetary prizes. Despite a contestant’s age, Queen Of The Point has high standards and judging criteria. Surfers are judged by their ability to uphold and celebrate “the grace and flow of female approach to traditional longboarding,” according to their website. The organization says that they primarily judge the contestants on their style, tricks and maneuver difficulty and variety, and her ability to showcase traditional longboarding ethics on all sections of a wave. Depending on the category, each heat (round of 4-6 surfers within a division), gives surfers 15-30 minutes to showcase her best maneuvers, unique style and grace on her longboard. With over 50 competitors, the title Queen Of The Point, is a high honor.
