As we enter a brand-new semester and year ahead, coming to campus might look different in comparison to how we left it in May 2026. Coming back to Cal State Channel Islands, it feels new, not because the campus itself has been altered completely, but because I have too. I have new perspectives and slowly have felt myself shift into a new person, someone who is ready to take on the world. One noticeable transition at CI is the completely new visual identity, with brand new colors and designs that make CI different from what we used to know it as. Ariana Robles, Director of Orientation and Engagement Programs, said, “The refreshed brand brings greater consistency to how we communicate who we are as a University.” This shift allows for a consistent identity that creates a strong sense as to who CI is. A place where academic opportunities are endless, as well as hands-on experiences to connections that give students something tangible to connect themselves with. As first-year students begin their college careers at CI, they look around and may see these changes as part of the beginning of college, but as a senior, they symbolize the beginning of the end.
Coming Back
When I look around at CI and see the transformations that have come, I cannot help but notice how unexpected it has felt, but not in a sad way. In a way that makes me feel like I can grow from what I used to know and step out of my comfort zone. Continuing to complete my communications degree, the shift represents a fresh start, a beginning for all. The University we know allows for change, tradition and memories. CI’s new message, “Your channel to everywhere” represents the access to endless opportunities. Whether it be access to research, connections with professors or simply a place where innovation can thrive. I take this shift as an opportunity to continue to grow in an environment that fosters change. The fall semester has approached quickly, where students can begin, continue or conclude their journey at CI. Over the course of the first two weeks of the semester, CI’s Weeks of Welcome offer many opportunities for students to become involved and so much more.
During the first week of school, students had a chance to connect socially, explore campus resources and get involved with CI and campus life through various events. One of the goals of Weeks of Welcome is to create a strong sense of belonging. Robles also mentioned, “My hope is that students find meaningful and engaging opportunities to connect with the campus community, build relationships with their peers, and strengthen their sense of belonging at Cal State Channel Islands.” Weeks of Welcome allow students to explore, engage and get comfortable with the people and campus of CI. More specifically, The Student Union held events such as Sunshine Social, where students got to hang out, play games and do fun activities. Most importantly, engage with each other and connect with the campus community. The Student Union and Student Programming Board are hosting Blue Hour. A late-night event for all students featuring treats, giveaways and a DJ in mid-September to welcome students to the new year. Giving students the chance to interact and secure connections during the beginning of the year. As well as forming relationships that will last forever.
As the semester continues, students will have more opportunities to get involved, including The Student Union’s Leadership and Involvement fair on Tuesday, Sept. 1. This fair is a way for students to become involved and really understand what CI has to offer for any interests. Along with Foodie Tuesdays happening in the Central Mall, complied with various food trucks and vendors for all students to enjoy. Homecoming is also making its return, Oct. 5-10. The entire week of Homecoming is dedicated to fun activities that grow the community on campus. My fondest memories come from these activities, feeling nervous about if I would know anyone. As time went on, I found myself confident in the company I have made. Most notably the memories that happened at the beginning of the year. The same Weeks of Welcome, and campus engagement activities that allow students to find their place at CI. In which remind me of how familiar this campus has become, and how bittersweet is to watch new students begin their journey while mine is slowly coming to an end.
My Perspective
As CI begins a new chapter, I cannot help but think of my own college career, and the last chapter of my story at CI ends. I think about the first-year students who are just getting started and reflect on the time I first started at CI, when the campus was something I was still learning. I figured out where I was going, who I would meet and what my place at CI would be. Now, as I begin my senior year, so much of that uncertainty is filled with routines. This took time, a lot of getting to know people, even running around getting lost trying to find my classes. I realize that being part of CI is not just about attending classes. What makes CI meaningful are the experiences and opportunities that turn this campus into a community. Connections that I have made with faculty and students made an everlasting impression on me. The community that CI harbors is one that makes everyone want to be part of.
Now that I have begun my last year and prepare to leave the CI community, I am less concerned about the changes that have happened and am focused on the experiences I will have in my final year. Starting this academic year off strong, I began working as part of The CI View. An all-encompassing environment that makes me feel so passionate about being one of CI’s students. It might be easy to think of campus involvement as something you are supposed to do when you first arrive. Instead, think of it as a way to fully immerse yourself in such an amazing, supportive and inclusive campus community. As for me, I will be soaking up every second I have left. So, wherever you might be at your time at CI, take the opportunities that are out of your comfort zone, connect with the people and most of all make CI your own.
