CI is committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive campus environment for all students, including those who have experienced foster care, adoption, guardianship, kinship care or homelessness. The Dolphin Guardian Scholars (DGS) Program is a vital resource from Basic Needs dedicated to empowering these students by providing services that enhance academic success, personal growth and career development.
Comprehensive Support for Displaced Students
DGS focuses on improving access, retention, and graduation rates for students who have faced housing instability or displacement. Through personalized support, students receive assistance tailored to their unique challenges, ensuring they have the tools they need to thrive at CI and beyond.
Services Provided
Students enrolled in the Dolphin Guardian Scholars Program meet monthly with a DGS staff member to discuss key areas such as:
- Housing and basic needs
- Campus and community engagement
- Academic progress
- Mental health and wellness
- Career preparation and exploration
- Job and internship opportunities
- Financial literacy
DGS scholars also have access to a range of services, including:
- Academic assistance
- Career exploration
- Financial literacy education
- Coaching and student leadership development
- Graduate school preparation
- Job and internship search support
- Guidance with housing, scholarships, and community resources
- Mentoring opportunities
By providing these essential resources, DGS helps students build a strong foundation for academic and personal success.
Who is Eligible?
Students may qualify for Dolphin Guardian Scholars if they meet any of the following criteria:
- Have been in foster care between ages 0-18
- Were in guardianship between ages 0-18
- Have lived with a relative or family friend (not a biological parent) between ages 0-18
- Were adopted between ages 0-18
- Have experienced homelessness between ages 0-18
The program welcomes first-time freshmen, transfer students, non-traditional adult students and students returning to CI.
How to Apply
Students interested in joining Dolphin Guardian Scholars must complete an application and participate in an intake meeting. Applications are reviewed within two business days and eligible students are invited to attend a DGS Orientation, where they will meet program staff and learn about benefits such as priority registration, the DGS living cohort and specialized educational workshops.
