On Jan. 7 fire responders responded to a fire that was later called about a wildfire that had started at 6:18 pm local time. According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection,
The Eaton fire as of Jan. 29 2025 is 99% contained with officials saying that 14,021 acres have burned, 9,418 structures destroyed, 1,073 structures damaged, and 17 lives have been lost.
Here is a timeline of the Eaton fire according to Cal fire officials and local news sources (all times are local.)
Jan 7 – 6:18 pm: The Fire reported in Altadena later became known as the Eaton fire.
Jan 8 – 9:00 am: By this time the Eaton fire has reached 2,227 acres. The Pasadena school district closes all schools at this time.
Jan 8 – 1:21 pm: Eaton fire increases by 5 times its size as it has burned 10,600 residential buildings.
Jan 8 – 11:00 pm: Pasadena residents were issued a “Do not drink your water” warning as warnings from Pasadena Water and Power service areas were told to not drink tap water until further notice. This is because the Eaton fire contaminated local water systems with toxins such as benzene and other chemicals. 2 civilian fatalities were reported.
Jan 10 – 8:08 am: Eaton fire size is 13,956 acres, 3% containment.
Jan 11 – 3:12 pm: Eaton’s fire size is 14,117 acres, 15% containment, and 5 firefighters injured.
Jan 15 – 8:03 pm: Eaton fire size is 14,117 acres, 45% containment, 16 civilian deaths, and 6 firefighters injured.
So who is to blame for the Eaton fire?
Some allegations are going on and one of those allegations is Edison being the blame for the Eaton fire. A video that has been circulating the internet shows one utility transmission spark and after you see what appears to be flames that had appeared underneath. Edison has denied these claims as there appears to have been a lawsuit filed against Edison.
